The secret diary of Adrian Mole
I would like to start by saying that this book is another great example that shows us how life really is. Furthermore, all of the actions are explained by the protagonist, Adrian, through his diary, where he expresses his thoughts and feelings on topics that are mostly regarding his own problems and the other being about world problems . Moreover, it is blatant that this novel depicts the ''agonies'' encountered by a plethora of teenagers, all of them expressed through Adrian's life.
The main theme of the book is the desire of true love, this being mentioned thorough the diary. We may also find some examples in this book, where true love is actually abstruse and that Adrian doesn't have true feelings for Pandora, only that he knows he wants a girlfriend and that he wants to get married by the age of sixteen years old. For instance, when his friend started 'dating' Pandora, Adrian instantly forgot about her. This shows that the majority of youngsters don't understand how true love really is and that they only see it as a possible game. However, while on the death bed after a surgical operation, Adrian can't stop thinking about his young love, saying that only love can save him. All he wanted was to get Pandora to forgive him. Even though adults may find this as nonsense, they are all teenage agonies engendered by love. Furthermore, he is constantly concerned by his parents desire for alcohol and that their love is not ideal, therefore committing that he won't make the same mistakes as his parents.
Another teenage agony encountered in this novel is the fact that teenagers are not confident about their body. For instance, Adrian thinks that the pimples on his face are enormous and that it may hamper him from finding his true love. He thinks that he will lose Pandora because of his pimples. Afterward, Pandora tells Adrian that she loves him because of the person he is. Therefore, we may understand that Pandora has a more clear view of what true love really is and that the definition of love may be understood different by each individual.
Moreover, Adrian is envious of his friend who has a race bicycle, something that Adrian doesn't have. This may also be seen as a teenage agony that we all have to acquiesce that we encountered it once in our lifetime.
Given the above mentions, the renowned novel, 'THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE ,AGED 13 3/4' by Sue Townsend, has a fictional story to which we all can relate to. It also shows that regardless of the problems we go through, there always is a solution.
