The Opportunity For More Power

01.04.2020

On Monday, the Hungarian parliament had voted to give the Prime Minister Viktor Orban special powers to rule by decree, effectively giving him the right to single-handedly run the country indefinitely. But Hungary isn't the only country from Eastern Europe who used different ways to let their leaders to grasp more power.

It is blatant that now leaders are taking action in ways it wouldn't have been thought months prior. For instance, closing schools, bars or restaurants are only a few.

While a plethora of people see this pandemic as a world problem, leaders see this as an opportunity to grasp more power and intentionally create rules which infringe some UDHR rules. This also happens in countries from Eurasia, where leaders can take rules freely. For instance, a lot of countries free inmates because they think that this way they can avoid the high density of population.

Even though this pandemic is quite ubiquitous, some leaders didn't see this as a hiatus from letting public gatherings and activities from happening.

If you're interested in learning more about Orban's new expanded powers or what other leaders in the region are up to in the midst of the pandemic, here's what I read prior this article:
