The God of Small Things
Rules of love
I would like to start by saying that a plethora of people are accustomed to see love without boundaries and that each individual may expresses their love in the way he or she envision it. The renowned debut book of Arundhati Roy, 'The God of Small Things', addresses the idea of 'Love laws' that lead to how love should be practiced, furthermore being exemplified with the help of the characters that have an important role in this novel.
In comparison to other novels which talk about the theme of love, this book isn't left behind. Arundhati Roy states the so-called 'Love laws' throughout it. This set of rules determine 'who should be loved, and how. And how much.' Unfortunately, these laws play a big role in the Indian culture, being a hiatus in social behaviour. Even though these work for the majority of people, there are some individuals who see the true colour of love and that it shouldn't have laws.
For instance, Ammu and Velutha are two individuals who break these unwritten rules for love. Velutha is an 'Untouchable ', that means that he is in the lowest rank on the social scale, therefore nobody should love him other than people like him. Some people also say that it is illegal for him to love someone with a higher rank than him. This may seem abstruse to people who see love as a feeling that shouldn't have borders. Regardless, Ammu, who is from a more wealthy family, isn't allowed by her parents to be in a relationship with Velutha. They see each other at an abandoned house without anyone knowing. When Ammu's parents found out about the relation Ammu and Velutha had, they did everything to stop it. In the end Velutha dies in prison and Ammu's family is ashamed of her. Furthermore, Estha and Rahel are separated for almost 23 years.
After being separated, Rahel got married to a man in the USA and found out that she didn't know how to express her love to him. In comparison to her, Estha has given up speaking entirely and goes on long walks around Ayemenem without telling anyone where he's going. When they saw each other for the first time, they didn't know how to express their feelings and break the 'Love laws' by expressing the physical love for each other. I want to add that if they hadn't been separated when they were little, they wouldn't have gotten in this unfortunate situation.
Given the above mentions, I acquiesce to the fact that love shouldn't have rules, therefore making it possible for everyone to express their love for one another.
