LOVE IS NOT LOVE WHICH ALTERS WHEN IT ALTERATION FINDS

22.04.2020

I would like to start by saying that only by thinking about the given quote, it takes us to the concept that love is perpetual and that it can not be hindered. Furthermore, it may also be understood by some people as a definition to the knotty concept of love which has been like this for a plethora of human beings.

On the one hand, the lines from Shakespeares' renowned 116th sonnet 'LOVE IS NOT LOVE WHICH ALTERS WHEN IT ALTERATION FINDS' defines love and how it divides in two conversely categories. One love that is eternal and is faithful and the other one which is on the contrary and unfortunately flimsy. Moreover, Shakespeare perceives love as essential to each one of us, making it true love only when death separates us from our beloved one.

On the other hand, produced after the novel, 'Doctor Zhivago', the movie which undergoes by the same name, blatantly approaches a diametrically opposed idea. In this movie we may find out that love can be serene and perpetual even though it is divided between two different partners. Even though in this movie a person is in love with two different women, his love for them does not diminish. In comparison to Shakespeare who states that true love shall not be altered and that it towards only one individual, this movie emphasis the fact that love can be towards different people and that unfortunately isn't the real love we had though of prior watching the movie. For instance, Yuri, the main character, has a wife, Tonia, and their 'love' for each other is like a necessity that, for me personally, isn't the real love Shakespeare talks about in his Sonnets. Furthermore, Yuri fell in love with Lara, defining it as 'love at first sight', making 'love' in this act nothing more than just a simple attraction. To some extent, he had caught feelings for her, given the fact that he doesn't linger thinking about her until his unfortunate death.

I would also like to add that after understanding the 116th Sonnet and watching the movie, I came to the conclusion that love and time alter simultaneously. For instance, in the 20th century love became more of a necessity while in the 16th century it was all about the connections and the feelings that were between the two partners.

Given the above mentions, I honestly think that love is going to be in a continuous change because of the well known paradigms which change tremendously in our days. Furthermore, this also implies when beauty discrepancies occur through time, making it the opposite of love, as Shakespeare said in his Sonnet.
