Dinosaur... a name so ubiquitous, yet so unknown

27.03.2020

Even though the majority of people saw a picture or a video of a dinosaur, a plethora of us don't know how the name was invented. The person who cooked up this name is Richard Owen.

It is formed out of two ancient Greek words. It had firstly been named dinosauria. 'Dinos' means fearful or creepy and 'Soros' which means a reptile. Therefore, a dinosaur might be also called a fearful reptile.

Even though he had invented the name, he didn't become renowned because of some aspects. He was hard to get along with and most of the time he let other people do the hard work and he usually came up at the last minute in order to receive all the glory. The one who received all the glory was Charles Darwin.
